Cities are continuously shaped by invisible rules and systems that quietly organize our bodies, behaviors, and relationships. Tomotosi’s practice begins by placing his own body directly into these urban structures. Rather than confronting grand historical narratives or political discourses head-on, he reveals the cracks and gaps embedded within everyday systems through minor, absurd actions, repeated collisions, and slightly misaligned gestures.

Set in Seoul, this exhibition gathers and reconfigures the structures of mobility and consumption, cooperation and competition, as well as the gaze of the crowd. By twisting and rearranging these elements, it temporarily introduces alternative rhythms into the existing order of the city.

Throughout the works, Tomotosi’s body continuously collides with boundaries. He rents a traditional Hanbok at a shop near Gyeongbokgung Palace and, while still wearing the garment, travels back and forth between the Japanese Imperial Palace and South Korea’s Gyeongbokgung(casually eating gimbap at the Imperial Palace while he is at it). Through such interventions, borders of nation, language, culture, and institution are sometimes traversed in a comical, humorous manner, while at other times, their sheer existence is laid bare through physical collisions and repetitive actions.

Curated by the duo MBO, this exhibition unfolds with the design philosophy of the G-SHOCK serving as its underlying framework. Ultimately, the gallery will be filled with the tension and laughter, intimacy and awkwardness that emerge from these processes of collision.

도시는 끊임없이 보이지 않는 규칙과 시스템에 의해 구성되며, 그것들은 우리의 몸과 행동, 그리고 관계를 은밀하게 조율한다. 토모토시의 작업은 자신의 몸을 이러한 도시의 구조 속에 직접 위치시키는 데서 출발한다. 그는 거대한 역사적 서사나 정치적담론에 정면으로 맞서기보다, 사소하고 우스꽝스러운 행동들, 반복되는 충돌, 그리고 미묘하게 어긋난 몸짓을 통해 일상의 시스템 곳곳에 내재한 균열과 틈을 드러낸다.

서울을 배경으로 하는 이번 전시는 이동과 소비의 구조, 협력과 경쟁의 관계, 그리고 군중의 시선과 같은 도시의 다양한 작동 원리들을 수집하고 재배열한다. 그렇게 비틀리고 재구성된 요소들은 도시의 기존 질서 속에 잠시 다른 리듬과 감각을 끼워 넣는다.

작품 전반에 걸쳐 토모토시의 몸은 끊임없이 경계와 충돌한다. 그는 경복궁 인근의 한복 대여점에서 한복을 빌린 뒤, 그 차림 그대로 일본 황궁과 한국의 경복궁을 오가며 퍼포먼스를 수행한다. 때로는 황궁 앞에서 김밥을 먹는 식의 익살스러운 행위를 통해국가와 언어, 문화와 제도의 경계를 가볍고 유머러스하게 가로지르기도 하고, 때로는 물리적인 충돌과 반복적인 행동을 통해 그러한 경계가 실제로 존재하고 있음을 적나라하게 드러내기도 한다.

MBO의 큐레이션으로 구성된 이번 전시는 ‘G-SHOCK’의 디자인 철학을 하나의 잠재적 구조로 삼아 전개된다. 충격을 흡수하면서도 형태를 유지하는 그 구조처럼, 전시 공간은 충돌의 과정 속에서 발생하는 긴장과 웃음, 친밀함과 어색함으로 가득 채워질 것이다.
