At the very tip of the tree of life, the fruit of the mind ripened. At some point—without any foreknowledge of our own—we came into being. As a phenomenon known as the mind, permitted only a brief pause amidst the endlessly interconnected causality of nature. How do we come to terms with this journey—a journey that began 3.5 billion years ago, or perhaps 13.8 billion years ago, or even earlier—a journey that is ‘me’ yet not ‘me’? Amidst our floating understanding of the world, as we share the fatigue of looking back, we wonder what fleeting thoughts we should grasp. 

Perhaps our weariness is not intended to tell stories explaining the beginning, but rather to capture the changes occurring here and now—that is, to accept the vague phenomena of the reality we face. The world is always described in terms of the causality of creation and destruction, yet what we actually encounter in our daily experience is the continuous persistence of forces where beginning and end are not segmented. Within a single movement, some things take form, some disperse, and others transform. We call the events that briefly emerge within this flow—where coalescing forces interconnect—‘existence’. And the finite human mind, in order to encompass the existence before its eyes within its own understanding, must always call upon that which lies beyond itself; we call the response to that call ‘belief’ and ‘faith’.

Lee Ye-ju seeks to respond to this demand of the mind. She aims to achieve solace for the mind, which dwells briefly in the world, through the warmth of eternity and a connection with imagined causality that does not exclude the irrational. Just as we might once again accept our ancestors, scattered like water, as part of ourselves, or interpret the movements of nature as a revelation that traces causality back to its origins, here we connect with this imagined eternity. The solace presented here by the artist is experienced not so much through the content of faith, but rather through the structure of faith itself; it is experienced in the ability to sense the connection and imagine one’s own time. We can sense that we are confronting the world through our own imagination, and that the finitude of the spirit which makes this possible is a condition constituting eternity.

“O martyr of eternity, we pray here on your behalf. May the blessing of that which is above and the wisdom of that which is beneath accompany you on your journey. May you humbly blend into this place without pitying your own rootlessness.”

생명이라는 나무의 끝에서 정신이라는 열매가 맺혔다. 우리는 어느 순간 —우리 자신의 예정됨 없이— 세상에 출현했다. 끝없이 연결되는 자연의 인과 속에서, 잠시 머묾만을 허락받은 정신이라는 현상으로. 35억 년 전부터, 어쩌면 138억 년 전, 혹은 그 이전으로부터 시작된 —나 아닌 나의— 여정을 우리는 어떻게 받아들이고 있을까. 부유하는 세계 이해 속에서 어떠한 단상을 손에 쥐어야 할지, 지금을 함께하는 우리들은 소급에 대한 피로를 공유한다.

어쩌면 우리의 피로는 시작을 설명하는 이야기들을 하기 위함이 아닌, 지금 여기에서 일어나고 있는 변화를 포착하기 위함, 즉 마주하는 현실의 막연한 현상들을 받아들이기 위함일지도 모른다. 세계는 언제나 생성과 소멸의 인과로 기술되지만, 실제로 우리가 일상 경험에서 마주하는 것은 시작과 끝이 분절되지 않는 연속된 힘들의 지속이다. 하나의 운동 속에서 어떠한 것은 형태를 얻고, 어떤 것은 흩어지며, 다른 것으로 변화한다. 이 흐름 속에서 잠시 드러나는 —응집되는 힘들이 연관되는— 사건을 우리들은 존재라고 부른다. 그리고 유한한 인간의 정신은 눈앞의 존재를 자신의 이해로 포섭하기 위해 항상 자신 밖의 것을 요청해야만 하는데, 그 요청에 대한 응답을 우리는 신념과 신앙이라 한다.

이예주는 이러한 정신의 요청에 응답하고자 한다. 세계속에 잠시 머무는 정신의 위안을 영원성의 따듯함으로, 비이성을 배제하지 않는 상상된 인과와의 연결됨을 통하여 이루고자 한다. 물이 되어 흩어진 조상을 다시금 자신의 일부로 받아들이거나, 자연의 움직임을 인과를 소급하는 하나의 계시로 해석하는 과정과 같이, 우리는 이곳에서 상상된 영원성에 연결된다. 여기서 작가가 제시해 주는 위안은 신앙의 내용을 제시하기보다는, 신앙의 구조를 제안하는 것으로서, 연결됨 자체를 감각하며 자신의 시간을 상상할 수 있음에서 경험된다. 우리는 우리 자신의 상상력을 통해 세계를 마주하고 있음을, 이것을 가능하게 하는 정신의 유한함을 영원성을 구성하는 조건으로서 감각할 수 있다.

"영원의 순교자여, 우리는 이곳을 빌려 기원합니다. 머리 위의 것의 축복과 발 아래 것들의 지혜가 당신의 여정에 함께하기를. 바라옵건대, 자신의 뿌리 없음을 가여이 여기지 않고 겸허히 이곳에 스며들 수 있기를."
